Ogen Deep Dive | Yemima Seven-Session Series: Decisions In this series, we turn our attention to the inner landscape of choice. All classes are live on zoom and are recorded and sent to you after class. When a choice arrives, we leave habit mode (what science calls System 1) and move into deliberate thinking (System 2). We have to be alert, pay attention, and actually weigh our options. This is why decisions take so much energy. They ask us to look at things we don’t usually stop to consider: what matters to us, what is truly within our power, and how our choice affects the people connected to it. These questions can stir up strong emotions, sometimes to the point of flooding. If I decide, I might hurt myself. If I decide, I become responsible. The agency is wonderful, and it can also be crushing. Some of us procrastinate until we have no choice. Others freeze in fear, ruminate, compromise, or over-exert. A decision won’t let us stay inside the story we imagine about the world. It asks us to face reality and choose an option. That is what makes decisions such hard moments, and such important ones. They can crack open something we’ve wanted for a long time. They can be led by joy and bring us closer to ourselves. In this series, we will work with the emotional stages of a decision. Session 1: After the Holidays The holidays are often when we make big resolutions, and then we have to bring them down to earth. What happens when we try to act on a decision? How can we do that work in the softest way possible? Session 2: Fear, Numbness, and Coming Close Decisions can bring anxiety, fear of choosing wrong, and self-blame. We will explore the ecology of these feelings and learn ways to work with them. Session 3: Connecting with Inner Joy How can we find an inner compass that helps us hold our emotional core in times of instability? Session 4: Long-Term Decisions, Broken Down Long-term decisions can be especially complicated. The tool of Diyuk teaches us to take it easy: to look as far ahead as we can see, and no further, and to trust. Session 5: Melacha Session We will take a decision you feel strongly about and work through it step by step, using a guided protocol. Session 6: What If I Made a Good Decision? Yemima teaches that we always do what we can for our own good. When we can tell [X] apart from yesh, we begin to see the ways we tried to help ourselves, and we can learn from them. Session 7: Closing and Gathering Insights Hanukkah Sameach!
